Can Africa become the world's food basket? Is there a contradiction between a fair trade with countries in Africa and a desire to preserve Norwegian food production? Norway is one of the most protectionist countries in the world. We have high tariff barriers for foods we produce ourselves and subsidizing agriculture that we will face competition from poor countries. Today, we increased tariffs further on meat and cheese. This leads to it being difficult for other countries to sell their goods on the Norwegian market, and in a European crisis. This can cause the same to be done in other Western countries as well, as everyone wants to preserve food production in their own country. The consequences of this is that farmers in poor countries can not compete with the artificially cheap goods from rich countries, although the quality is often at least as good. Poor peasants lose the competition both on the world market and in their own homeland. It is cheaper to buy subsidized food from the West than goods from their own country.
